KOTTAMEDU

  •  Area:  400 sq.ft & 300 sq.ft units (24 houses built)
    Project Type:  Community-led Tribal Housing
Location:  Kottamedu, Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu

  • Led by partner NGO, The Banyan, this project has been funded by HCL Foundation

  • Community-led design: Houses were co-designed with Irular families, responding to Vaastu, climate, and everyday needs such as verandahs with katte, puja niches, and study corners.
  • Affordable & climate-responsive: 24 compact houses (300–400 sq.ft) were built using locally made Stabilized Adobe Blocks (SAB), ensuring thermal comfort, durability, and low cost.
  • Beyond housing: The project built skills, ownership, and dignity—creating a replicable model for participatory tribal housing.
